YOU ARE A SONGWRITER!

The Bible tells us all to sing to a new song to the Lord (Psalm 96:1).

God wants to hear from YOU.

He likes the songs from YOUR heart.

Tell Him something new today and use YOUR own words to do so.

Sing a new song to the Lord!
Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!
Sing to the LORD; praise his name.
Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.
Publish his glorious deeds among the nations.
Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.
Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise!

(Psalm 96, New Living Translation)

So what are you waiting for? Sing a new song to him! Praise him! Tell the world that he saves! Publish his deeds! Tell everyone about the amazing things he does! He is worthy of it!

I Will Rise by Chris Tomlin

There’s a peace I’ve come to know
Though my heart and flesh may fail
There’s an anchor for my soul
I can say “It is well”

Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead

And I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow, no more pain
I will rise on eagles’ wings
Before my God fall on my knees
And rise
I will rise

There’s a day that’s drawing near
When this darkness breaks to light
And the shadows disappear
And my faith shall be my eyes

Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead

And I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow, no more pain
I will rise on eagles’ wings
Before my God fall on my knees
And rise
I will rise

And I hear the voice of many angels sing,
“Worthy is the Lamb”
And I hear the cry of every longing heart,
“Worthy is the Lamb”

And I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow, no more pain
I will rise on eagles’ wings
Before my God fall on my knees
And rise
I will rise

(from the album “Hello Love” by Chris Tomlin)

God gives us the power to rise above our sin, our shame, our shortcomings.. He gives us the power to rise above the storms that we face and the darkness that surrounds us.

What is it that you need to rise above in your life today?

Once in a while God will speak to us if we are listening.. That speaking isn’t in the way that we’d probably prefer; however if you quiet yourself and tune into trying to hear Him – you may just catch something that He’s throwing your way.

My problem has been that I can be tuned in and feel as though I’ve received some sort of revelation; yet after days, weeks or even years I forgot about that moment of clarity.

It’s been said that vision leaks. There’s truth to that statement. How can we keep those moments of absolute clarity in the front our minds long after they occurred?

That’s why I wrote this song, Go With Me.

Go With Me
Heard a whisper in the dark and knew that you had called
Felt your breath upon my face, sensing you were near
Oh Lord, sometimes it’s hard to remember that you were here

So I will not leave this place until you’re presence goes with me
Go with me, I pray
And I will not stray away for you are here with me
You’re with me, you said – (you said)

There’s a stirring in the air, a movement built with love
With compassion in its wake, that must be from above
Oh Lord, please let me remember that you were here

So I will not leave this place until you’re presence goes with me
Go with me, I pray
And I will not stray away for you are here with me
You’re with me, you said – (you said)

You said You’ll never leave me, You said that I can follow
You said that You are with me until the end
I’m here and I will follow, I will not chase another
Oh God I make this promise for all my days

So I will not leave this place until you’re presence goes with me
Go with me, I pray
And I will not stray away for you are here with me
You’re with me, you said

And I will not leave this place until you’re presence goes with me
Go with me, I pray
And I will not stray away for you are here with me
You’re with me, you said – you said

Sometimes I will blog a song that I’ve written.. This is the first one of many of those posts that you’ll find on here for a little backstory to a song.

Last year as I was finishing up the One Life album project, I sat down in the hustle and bustle of it all and penned a song titled Running Nowhere..

I think in a song like this the words speak for themselves but I will add to them– that when we try to go this life on our own we’ll always come up way short. In fact, when we leave the one who made us- out of the drivers seat- we are running nowhere.

The song is an invitation to not only allow others around you to play a role in the cast of your life’s great story; but also to allow the one who made you and has a greater plan for your life to direct the story. It’s up to you, though. Here it is, lyrics under the video..

Running Nowhere
Words and Music by: Dave Longstreth

You’ve been down this road before
You’ve been running towards the door
Trying to escape it all, can’t take no more

When you’re down and out of luck
Feelin’ strapped and feelin’ stuck
Searching high and low, caught in a rut

Running, but getting nowhere
Running, you’re losing ground
So take my hand, reach out your hand
And I will lift you up

So your world is caving in
And your life is spread so thin
Need to catch your breath you just can’t win

Feelin’ like you’ll crash and burn
Something waits at every turn
Trying to figure out when will you learn

Running, but getting nowhere
Running, you’re losing ground
So take my hand, reach out your hand
And I will lift you up

If there’s one thing you’ll learn
It’s you can’t go alone
Through this world, through this life
On your own
So give me your hand, I have got a plan
You will see what your life was meant to be

So hurry no more
And take some time to walk with me
And I’ll give you everything that you need
If you trust in me each day
To live up to my word
I promise that you’ll never be the same
I promise that you’ll never be the same

If there’s one thing you’ll learn
It’s you can’t go alone
Through this world, through this life
On your own
So give me your hand, I have got a plan
You will see what your life was meant to be
You will see what your life was meant to be

I was at our technology-driven “satellite” campus today leading worship. Something happened that happens a few times a year here – various technology failed this morning causing a disruption in the flow of the music, the delivery of the sermon via stream and the response time at the end of the service.

We are usually prepared for these occurrences with our plethora of backup plans and such – but it usually causes a little frustration and dissatisfaction in our ability to produce excellence for our services.

Luckily for us as well as churches all over the planet, tech-driven or not, we know that the Spirit of God is in control. We know that where technology or humans, professional or amateur, may fail – God draws people close to Him. It is there, when we seem to be tuned into Him amidst the distractions around us, that He speaks loudly to us.

I think that the same principle applies in our daily wanderings. There is plenty around us to distract us. These things may distract us from God, from our spouse, from our kids, from our work ethic and so on. But what happens when these distractions go away? What happens at home when the electricity goes out late in the evening? Do you light a candle and huddle the family together? What happens when the Internet goes out at work?

Thank you God for your daily presence, available anywhere and everywhere!
