Shut up!

Shut your mouth, Dave.

That’s what I felt God was speaking to me in the silence and solitude of our sanctuary during the morning worship and prayer today.

I fill my life with NOISE…

Busy

Hustle

Barrage of communication and media

Music

Incessant talking

So what?

Zip your mouth!

In any relationship we need to just zip our mouths shut and listen to the other person. It adds value to that person. It allows us to be in a reciprocal relationship.

Same goes with God our Father.

“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get. But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!” (Matthew 6:5-8 NLT)

Yup…

Speaks for itself doesn’t it?

Shut your mouth… and listen…

What’s he saying?

This morning (Monday, February 27) we allowed God to speak to our hearts in a time of stillness between several times of heartfelt and exuberant praise and worship. Some of us shared from our seats what we felt God had been whispering to our hearts in the area of what do we need to die to today..

As we let go of what it is that we hold onto so tightly in our lives– and as we allow Him to take control of us- He promises to never let go of us. We let go so that we can hold onto Him.

A Psalm of David

The LORD is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
He leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.

He guides me along right paths,
Bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
For you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

You prepare a feast for me
In the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
All the days of my life,
And I will live in the house of the Lord, forever.

(Psalm 23 – New Living Translation)

God is faithful. He promises to never leave us or forsake us. He walks with us through the storms, the highs, the lows, the peaks, the valleys. Even in the darkest valley He is with us. He promises to be faithful. He is faithful. He will always be faithful.

When you close your eyes, clear you heart and let go – what do you hear God whispering to you?

Our first few days of the New Year as a family have been productive.. We took down decorations. We setup Christmas gifts and enjoyed them, such as Wii games and a Keurig. We did some cleaning, arranging, organizing, assembling, etc.

But now it’s time to get on with the year, right? Now it’s time to actually start working on those resolutions. Now it’s time to put the closing parenthesis on our break ) and get back into flow. Now is the time to catch up on the emails, voicemails, snail mails, and the piles that we’ve accumulated over the holiday break!

What are you going to start getting serious about? Good luck!

From my family to yours – Happy New Years!

I feel like that string of lights you pull out of the Christmas decorations box at the beginning of the season that needs unwound and separated. Sound like you too?

I have my wires crossed today.. Lack of flow or clear direction.. Even my sentences aren’t making sense..

Too much Christmas on the brain? Closing out the year at work? At home? Thinking about that turkey or ham dinner already? Worried about whether I’m on the naughty or nice list? I’m not sure, probably all of the above..

This season is one of my favorites of the year.. It’s also one the busiest for me around the church here.. Join me today in taking a few minutes out of your busyness to untangle, separate and make all the right connections.

One more week! Enjoy the process not just the end result!
